Wired it wrong? WireWhy is a free electrical wiring simulator in your browser. Wire breakers, GFCIs, switches, outlets, relays and motors like a real installation, then switch it on or break something. It calculates the current in every wire and shows you why the breaker tripped or the light stayed dark, and the path the fault current took. Measure like an electrician, practise on exercises that check your circuit, or build your own for a class. 120/240 V or 230/400 V. No account needed.

Hi Product Hunt! I'm Mateusz.

I've always been curious about electricity, and when I became a homeowner I realised I had no idea what was actually going on inside my walls. Why does the GFCI in the bathroom trip? What happens if a wire comes loose? Would anything stop me getting a shock?

I went looking for a simulator to learn on, and couldn't find one that showed even a common mistake properly, like a light whose neutral is wired back the wrong way, so the GFCI trips every time you switch it on. So I built WireWhy.

You wire a circuit the way it really is in a house: the panel, breakers, a GFCI, switches, lights and outlets. Then you switch it on, or break something on purpose. WireWhy works out the real current in every wire and tells you, in plain words, what happened and why: which breaker tripped and how fast, where the current went, or why a metal light fixture would give you a shock when nothing trips at all.

I hope it helps you:

  • understand how the electricity in your home works, from the panel to the outlet

  • see what can go wrong: loose neutrals, missing grounds, overloaded cables, the wrong breaker

  • know what to look out for, and when it's time to call an electrician

If you want to go further, there's a course from your first light switch to motor control, fault-finding puzzles, and real meters to measure with. Teachers can build exercises that check themselves.

The simulator is free, with no account. Paid plans add advanced devices, exam practice and classroom tools. It works for US homes (120/240 V) and most of the world (230/400 V), in English, Polish, German and Portuguese.

Try the puzzle on the first screen: the GFCI trips every time the bathroom light comes on. Can you find out why?

One honest note: it's for learning and understanding, not a replacement for a licensed electrician. Please don't open your panel because a simulator said so. 🙂

I'd love to hear what you think, and especially what's wrong or missing, from electricians and teachers most of all.

@mateusz_hinca This is a great way to understand electrical faults without the risk of working with real circuits
