I built this because shadowing is the technique that actually improved my speaking, but doing it properly is tedious: constant rewinding, and no objective way to tell whether you got the pronunciation right.
TryShadowing removes the friction. Paste any YouTube link → captions become short sentences → shadow each one → get scored per line.
It's completely free with no account required. I'm not monetising it right now.
What I'd love feedback on: the pronunciation scoring accuracy, and whether the dictation + shadowing combination makes sense or feels like two apps bolted together.
would love to see a difficulty filter so i can pick videos by speaker speed or accent, the bbc clips are a bit fast for me but ted talks feel just right
finally something that actually uses youtube as a real learning tool instead of pretending caption-clicking counts as study. the dictation being scored word by word is genuinely useful, feels way more honest than those apps that just give you a vague percentage at the end.
love the dual approach with shadowing and dictation, that combo really clicks for me. one thing that would help a lot is letting us upload our own audio clips or podcasts to shadow, so i can practise with content i actually care about instead of just yt videos.
