The story of Speedtab actually started around 2010. I fell in love with Opera’s legendary Speed Dial, but I was testing web apps across dozens of different machines and browsers. Back then, Opera didn't sync your layout. Frustrated by this, I told myself: "Fine, I’ll go build my own theme park! With blackjack and Hooks!" 🎰
By 2012, the first WebApp version was alive. It had visual bookmarks, notes, and an RSS reader. For years, I maintained it. In fact, if you visit the web version today (speedtab.de), you’re looking at a living fossil—I haven’t touched that server code since 2018. It works perfectly for my old account, but the password hashing algorithm is so outdated now that new registrations are basically broken. And honestly? I had absolutely zero desire to dive back into server maintenance.
On top of that, a WebApp is useless when you're offline.
That’s why I finally rebuilt Speedtab from scratch as a modern, local-first Chrome Extension. No more server drama.
To make it handle hundreds of feed items and nested notes without destroying my browser's performance, I stripped out heavy frameworks like React or Vue and wrote a custom vanilla event-delegation pattern called YaiJS.
Why this matters for your browser today:
* The Framework Trap Defeated: Instead of choking your browser with 2,000+ active event listeners, Speedtab registers exactly ~35 global listeners on boot. HTML becomes interactive the millisecond it touches the screen.
* The 5MB Footprint: The JS heap flatlines at an absurd 4 to 7.5 MB. The entire process uses just 50-70 MB (Chrome’s absolute baseline for an empty page).
* Infinite Recursive Nesting: You can nest interactive tab components (like notes inside tabs inside tabs) up to 500 levels deep. I wrote an automated script that targets recursive injections, and the engine just eats those layers for breakfast while Chrome's render engine begs for mercy.
* Local-First Privacy: Everything lives securely inside your browser's IndexedDB. No accounts, no background tracking, zero data-selling.
* The Best of Both Worlds: You can still sync your workspace across devices seamlessly using your own self-hosted WebDAV or a hidden Google Drive folder.
It took 14 years of evolution and a broken 2018 hash algorithm to get here, and I'm incredibly proud to finally share it with the world.

the vanilla event delegation thing is honestly impressive, pages load instantly and my laptop fan actually stays quiet now. the encrypted notes are a nice touch for jotting stuff down without thinking about it.
