Hi PH 👋 I'm Peter, I build Periscope.
We launched here back in April — iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows. This is the Apple TV chapter, and it's the part I actually wanted to build.
The tvOS app does both jobs. As a server, the Apple TV becomes the always-on box your other devices connect back to. That was the missing piece: before this you had to leave a computer running at home. The Apple TV is already on, already sitting there, and draws almost nothing. As a client, you can put one in a flat abroad and watch your home-country services on the actual television, out of your own home IP, instead of hunching over a laptop.
You can already do the server half with Tailscale — it's run on Apple TV since 2023, and it's free. But it assumes you're comfortable with an SSO tailnet, a web admin console, approving an exit node, and re-auth when keys expire. I wanted the version my parents could set up: install it, pick "Server" on the first screen, pair your phone. One thing to know going in — the Apple TV has to be a HomeKit home hub or tvOS puts it to sleep, the same requirement Tailscale's exit node has. The app walks you through it.
WireGuard does the crypto. Nothing in our system records what you connect to — no domains, no DNS queries, no destinations. There's nowhere for it to go.
Three things I'd want to know if I were you:
• It's paid, $19.99/year or $2.99/month, where Tailscale's personal tier is free.
• It's closed-source and unaudited. Same team as Duet Display, which is a track record rather than a substitute for one.
• Your home upload is the ceiling, and if your home internet drops, so does the tunnel.
