How it started N8N Chat UI launched on the n8n community forum in April 2025 to fix a problem every n8n builder runs into: you build a great AI agent, put it on your website, and get a generic chat window with hardly any options to match your brand, unless you write the code yourself.
It caught on. More than 2,700 people have built widgets with it, and a lot of what shipped along the way began as requests from the community: session management, a free way to get started, streaming replies, voice notes and file uploads.
Why we bought it In August 2026, we bought N8N Chat UI from its original creator, and Nicholas and Daniel from Ross's team at DigitalME joined us to build it out. We could see how many people already relied on it, because it fixes what n8n's own chat widget can't. And we could see how much further it could go: more advanced features, and a library of ready-made n8n recipes we're building to give to the community for free.
Our first big step is getting it onto the platforms people actually build with: official plugins for WordPress, Wix, Webflow and Shopify, plus an n8n community node that replaces the usual webhook wiring.

The RTL support for Arabic is a useful detail. Does RTL also flip the input bar and file upload layout, and can one widget switch the welcome message and follow-up prompts by visitor language?
This looks useful for n8n workflows. Does it support custom branding across the whole chat widget?
The Managed widget approach is the part I would lean on first. Hiding the webhook behind a proxy plus domain restrictions solves the exact thing that makes me hesitate to embed an n8n chat directly. I also like that it stays no-code without locking out developers — passing page and user metadata, plus the sendMessage and theme-update hooks, means a widget can still behave like part of the site rather than a bolt-on.

Thank you all, this has been an amazing day. Over 70 comments and lots of great questions. Here's what you've told us so far:
🔁 Live takeover was the most-asked feature: people want a person to be able to step into the chat. We've sketched out how to build it, and it's now near the top of our list.
🔐 Shared computers and signed-in users: a sharp question about clearing chats when someone signs out. There's a way to handle it today, and a simpler built-in option is on our list.
🕘 Out of hours: most of you agree on letting the bot answer what it can and collect details for anything else, so nothing gets lost overnight.

Congrats on the launch, Ross and Dani! Out of hours I'd let the bot answer what it can and only collect the visitor's details when it gets stuck, so nothing gets lost overnight.
Is this to build chat support with n8n? and can we take over the chat ?
Does the widget keep the conversation history if a visitor reloads the page or comes back the next day? Also wondering how streaming behaves when the n8n workflow takes a while to respond.
Love the interactive builder and how easy it is to set up for those less technical. Is there any way you could populate it with some session context, ie the logged in user?

Agency clients always want the chat widget to look like their brand and not like n8n, so live preview plus voice and file uploads in a no-code builder is exactly the gap this fills for me.

Ross and I took this over in August. Today is the first time we've put it in front of a big crowd, so we want to hear what you think more than anything.
The part we're most curious about is the widget making the first move. Most chat widgets sit in the corner and wait. Ours can start the conversation: a few lines of JavaScript let it open with a question at the right moment. Our favourite example is someone who's been on the checkout page for two minutes. The widget asks "Any questions about shipping or returns?" and sends your n8n agent the context: which page they're on, how long they've been there, what's in their cart.
The tools behind that: → sendMessage() starts a chat from a button, a form, a URL parameter or an idle timer → updatePrompts() changes the suggested questions for each page → updateTheme() restyles the widget without losing the conversation → metadata and beforeSubmit send context to your workflow with every message
