The idea came from a frustration I kept hearing over and over: people would follow a makeup tutorial step by step, do everything "right," and it still wouldn't look good on them. The reason is simple but rarely addressed. Most makeup advice is made for someone else's face. The person teaching it has a different face shape, different coloring, and different features than the person watching. So "the perfect everyday look" is only perfect for the one face it was demoed on.
We wanted to flip that. Instead of "here's a look, copy it," Makeup DNA starts with you. A quick 2-minute quiz plus an AI face analysis reads your actual features, your face shape, skin tone, and eye and hair color, and turns that into a personal beauty profile. From there, every look, shade, and tutorial is chosen because it suits the person in the mirror. There's also Mia, an AI makeup artist you can upload your looks to for real feedback, so you actually improve over time.
The biggest shift while building it: early on we were obsessed with the face-scanning tech itself. But testing with real beginners taught us that the tech is only impressive if the output feels personal. A face-shape label means nothing on its own. What people actually wanted was "okay, so given my face, what do I do differently?" So we spent most of our effort on the recommendation and guidance layer, translating the analysis into clear, beginner-friendly steps, not on showing off the scan.
We also went multilingual early (24 languages) because we kept getting non-English users, and generic beauty content in your third language is even harder to follow.
