Hi everyone,
Last summer WeTransfer updated its terms of service with a clause granting itself a perpetual, sublicensable license over uploaded content, including wording about improving machine learning models. The company said within days that it had never used files that way, rewrote the clause, and removed the AI references. I believe them. That isn't really the point.
The point is that it was possible. If a service can read your files, then what happens to those files is a policy decision, and policies change. You find out in a terms update, if you find out at all.
FileXpire is built so the question doesn't arise. Files are encrypted in your browser before they upload. The password never reaches my server, and neither does anything readable. I couldn't train a model on your files if I wanted to, and neither could anyone who breached my infrastructure.
There are no cookies, no analytics, no tracking pixels, and no account needed to send or receive. The captcha is custom built and sets nothing in your browser.
You set an expiry before you send: 1 hour, 1 day, or 1 week. You can cap the number of downloads or limit access to specific countries and IP ranges. When the timer runs out, the file is deleted.
The two I use it for most: sending client work that is private, and sending a batch of photos to family who aren't going to sign up for anything. Same tool, different settings. One download and a password for the first. A week, no restrictions, for the second.
It's in beta. Two things I want to know:
Are 1 hour, 1 day and 1 week the right windows, or do you need something in between?
What's missing before you'd use this for real client work?
The fastest way to judge it is to send yourself a file set to expire in an hour. I'm in the comments all day, and I'd rather answer the awkward questions here than have someone find the answer later.
