Dead Scroll: Kill YouTube Distractions
Replaces 7 Chrome extensions in one. Free and open source.
Hey Hunters 👋
I built Dead Scroll to avoid falling into the YouTube algorithm rabbit hole.
I used to use the DF Tube extension during deep work to remove the home feed and recommendations. But a few years ago, Chrome changes broke it. Since then I tried a dozen other extensions to make my YouTube usage more intentional, but kept running into the same issues:
A) Each one only does one thing: removing Shorts, hiding the feed, or blocking ads
B) I'm worried about spyware, especially with recent npm supply-chain vulnerabilities
C) They're plain ugly, with endless toggles
So Dead Scroll replaces 7 popular Chrome extensions: Unhook, DF Tube, Dark Reader, uBlock Origin, Autoplay Stopper, and Theater Mode Default in one.
It also hides common YouTube ad surfaces and speeds through unskippable ads at 10x, so you're not sitting there waiting.
Another big pain point was that most extensions just hide algorithmic elements. And while that works, leaving a big white empty feed felt weird. It was as if my brain was so used to how YouTube looks that it kept wondering, what did I hide? So I replaced the feed with a dynamic wallpaper instead: a live universe with meteor showers that rotates daily.
The code is fully open source and uses no external npm packages or dependencies.
If you have ideas to make this better, contributions to the GitHub project are very welcome.
