I built Dam after experiencing one too many of those heart-stopping moments when screen sharing starts and you suddenly remember that your password manager, private messages, bank account, or sensitive files are still visible.
Preparing for a presentation shouldn’t require a ten-minute ritual of closing apps, cleaning the desktop, and checking dozens of browser tabs. So I created Dam—a native macOS menu bar app that automatically protects your privacy whenever you share or project your screen.
Dam provides three layers of protection:
🛡️ Apps — Automatically quit or minimize sensitive apps when screen sharing begins.
📁 Files — Hide protected folders in Finder and restore them when sharing ends.
🌐 Browser tabs — Close or isolate private websites such as email, banking, medical records, and personal chats.
Dam can detect screen capture from meeting and recording apps, as well as AirPlay, Sidecar, and external displays. It remembers which displays are public or trusted, so each screen only needs to be classified once.
It also includes a privacy-first ⌥Tab switcher that filters protected apps, plus customizable global shortcuts for instantly clearing your workspace.
Everything runs locally. There’s no account, no cloud storage, and no personal data leaves your Mac.

Tested it during a quick screen share and it kicked in before I even noticed anyone was watching, which is exactly the point. Really clean setup too.
One thing that would make this a must-have for me is letting users set custom keyboard shortcuts to manually toggle the hiding, since sometimes I want to hide apps even when I'm not actively screen sharing but doing a demo recording.
Really solid idea, especially for folks hopping on Zoom calls all day. One thing that would actually push me to install it though, you know, is letting people set up different hide lists per app, basically so I can keep Slack visible during work calls but hide it during screen recordings for clients.
honestly this looks really useful for anyone dealing with confidential stuff on calls. one thing though, would be cool if it could also blur or hide specific browser tabs not just apps, like when sharing your whole screen you know. anyway congrats on the launch
