Hi everyone, I'm Hova 👋 co-founder and CTO of Canopy. Canopy crowdfunds independent lab tests of everyday consumer products for contaminants like lead, cadmium, and arsenic — and puts all the data in the open: results, methodology, raw numbers. I built it because manufacturers mostly aren't required to test for these contaminants, and aren't required to share results when they do. Consumer Reports and EWG do great work, but they can only cover so much. So the idea is simple: you vote on what gets tested, and every result gets published — boring or alarming, no money from manufacturers. The part I care most about is making the numbers mean something. A raw figure like "0.4 µg/serving of arsenic" is meaningless without context (inorganic and organic arsenic are different!), and the reference you pick changes everything. So instead of a vibes-based letter grade, Canopy computes a Hazard Quotient against an explicit, sourced threshold and shows the work. The model: members vote → campaigns fund via Stripe Connect → we buy products anonymously at retail → send them to accredited labs → publish everything. Built with Next.js, Supabase, Stripe Connect, and Vercel. Would love your feedback, and I'll be here all day answering questions!

Love the idea of holding brands accountable. One thing that would make me trust it more is showing the actual lab results in a public archive so anyone can revisit them later instead of trusting a snapshot post.

Really cool idea, honestly this could actually push brands to clean up their stuff. One thing that would help me trust it more is letting backers see the raw lab results or at least a summary of the actual numbers detected, instead of just a pass or fail label. Basically more transparency on what was found and whether it crosses any known safety thresholds would make the whole thing feel a lot more legit.

Love how the site makes contributing to a test feel as easy as backing a Kickstarter. The category picker is genuinely well thought out.

honestly love how clean the request flow is here, you basically pick a product category and it just walks you straight through what to test without any clutter. the focus on backing tests rather than running them yourself is a smart way to crowdsource accountability.

A simple way to see results across categories would help. Like a public dashboard where anyone can browse what brands have been tested, who funded it, and what came back. Right now it feels like I'd only see outcomes for things I personally backed, but having a searchable archive would build trust and make it easier to decide what to request next.

The way you let people back specific test requests instead of just funding in general feels really smart. Makes the whole thing feel more like participatory science than just another donation page.

tested it with a candle i was suspicious of and the results actually came back within like four days, which was faster than i expected. honestly the interface makes it super easy to submit requests without feeling like you need a science degree

Who hunted Canopy?

Canopy was hunted by Kaitlyn Hova. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it. Hunters typically write the first comment explaining why a product is worth attention, and their followers are notified the moment they post. Around 79% of featured launches on Product Hunt are self-hunted by their makers, but a well-known hunter still acts as a signal of quality to the rest of the community.
