I wanted a drum machine I could open in a tab and start playing straight away - no install, no account, no sample library to download first. So I built BAP Studio.
It is 16 velocity-sensitive pads across four banks, a 16-step sequencer with per-step velocity and swing, four patterns that chain into a song, and a sampler that takes any audio file or mic recording, finds the transients and lays the chops across the pads. Every sound is synthesised in the browser, so there is nothing to install and nothing to wait for. You can export a WAV, a MIDI file, or a link that rebuilds your beat exactly as you left it.
Quickest way in: press Space to start the loop, then hit Z, C and A. Most people have something going in about a minute.

This looks fun. I’ve tried a few sampling machines and beat-making apps before, but honestly I never managed to get very far with any of them 😅
Being able to just open a browser and start making something in a minute sounds perfect for me. I’m especially curious about the sampler automatically detecting transients and placing the chops. Definitely want to give this a try!
Velocity-sensitive pads is doing a lot of work when the way in is Z, C and A. A key press has no velocity, so either that's WebMIDI with a controller plugged in, or velocity comes from where on the pad you click, and those are two completely different instruments. Worth saying which one on the page, because finger drummers are the people who'll care and they'll assume the first. The sampler finding transients and laying the chops out for you is the part I'd actually open a tab for.
