Vinolingo

Say wine names right. Hear it, say it back, get scored.

Vinolingo teaches you to pronounce 214 wine terms in six languages. Native audio and IPA for every term, then you say it yourself and speech recognition scores you. New: it hears accent mistakes, not just the word. No account, no tracking. iPhone and iPad.

Top comment

Hi everyone, Toby here. I built Vinolingo because I kept avoiding wine names I couldn't say. Gewürztraminer. Pouilly-Fuissé. I'd point at the menu instead.

Most wine apps give you a written respelling and stop there. That never worked for me, so Vinolingo does three things: it plays native audio for each term, it shows the IPA and the stressed syllable, and then it listens to you say the word and scores it. The newest version goes a step further: it no longer just checks that it heard the right word, it catches the typical mistakes in how you said it (the silent t in Cabernet, the nasal vowel in Sauvignon) and tells you what to fix. Everything runs on your phone, nothing is stored. Spaced repetition brings back the ones you miss.

214 terms right now: grapes, regions, label words, tasting vocabulary. Six languages. It's free to download with 35 terms, and there's a free web version of the whole guide at vinolingo.app/pronounce if you just want to look something up.

Happy to answer anything about the speech scoring, the audio, or which wine names people get wrong most (Viognier wins, by a lot).
