VAT Engine

EU VAT calculation and compliance API for e-commerce

VAT Engine turns official EU TEDB data into a developer-friendly API for e-commerce. Resolve current or historical VAT by country, product class, and supply date; calculate exact tax amounts; store audit-ready transaction evidence; monitor OSS thresholds; and prepare OSS/IOSS reports. It combines EU-27 coverage, 37 merchant-friendly tax classes, source profiles, and compliance reporting in one workflow—without spreadsheets or country-by-country plugins. Currently in alpha.

Hi Product Hunt! I’m Vasyl, the founder and builder of VAT Engine. I started working on VAT Engine because EU VAT becomes complicated very quickly. The applicable rate can depend on the customer’s country, product type, supply date, business status, thresholds, and reporting scheme. Smaller e-commerce and SaaS teams are often left combining spreadsheets, generic tax APIs, and separate platform plugins. VAT Engine is my attempt to turn that complexity into one developer-friendly workflow. It imports official EU TEDB data, maps the underlying categories into merchant-friendly tax classes, resolves current or historical rates, calculates VAT in exact minor units, and stores the result as audit-ready transaction evidence. That same data can then support OSS threshold monitoring, quarterly previews, exports, and future commerce integrations. GPT-5.6 has become part of my engineering workflow rather than just a tool for generating isolated snippets. I use it across architecture, implementation, Go backend work, Next.js frontend work, test design, security reviews, documentation, and release verification. The biggest benefit is being able to maintain context across a large system and keep moving from a product requirement to tested, documented code. VAT Engine is currently in alpha and under active development. I’d especially appreciate feedback from developers, e-commerce founders, accountants, and finance teams about the API design, tax-class model, and OSS/IOSS reporting workflow.
