I got here from a pretty mundane annoyance: my "plan to watch" list on
MyAnimeList kept growing, and I had zero sense of what that actually
meant. 40 titles sounds manageable until you realize some of those are
100+ episode shows. Every tracker I used (MAL, AniList, Shikimori) shows
you a list — none of them do the multiplication for you.
So the core of TokiWa is deliberately dumb: remaining episodes ×
episode length = real hours, broken down into what actually fits in an
evening, a weekend, or a vacation. That's it. Everything else (catalog,
import, multi-language) exists to support that one number.
I built it solo, and the process shifted a lot once the app was live.
The coding part was the easy half — Postgres quietly sorting NULLs
first and putting unreleased anime above a 9.1-rated classic, a sitemap
that grew past Vercel's size limit, a bulk sync that exhausted my DB's
connection pool at 2am. Normal stuff, fixable with coffee.
The harder shift was the last few days: cold-messaging anime community
admins on Telegram and VK, one at a time, asking if they'd share it —
no ad budget, just "I made this thing, want to tell your audience?"
Most said yes. That part taught me more than the backend ever did.
Happy to answer anything — stack, the backlog math, or why I gave up
trying to scrape MAL usernames directly (spoiler: their API blocks it
now, so import from MAL is a file upload instead of a username).
