Sunroof is the fast and simple way to find the perfect window of time to get off your screen and get outside. Sunroof is built around its unique "Weather Timeline," which lets you scroll through the hours and days ahead, fast-forwarding to any point in the near future, transforming the UI around you. Glide through your forecast with fluid precision, and find the best combination of temperature, rain, UV, wind, and more -- all in a single glance -- just by scrolling.
Hi! I'm the solo founder, designer, and developer of Sunroof.
The idea behind Sunroof came from my frustration in trying to find a window of time to get outside for a walk every day. I wanted to wake up in the morning and plan my day ahead, allocating a window of time to get off my screen and get outside. But predicting that window was always tricky.
I was confounded by how difficult this was when using conventional weather apps – often feeling like I was given a map and a lot of data, but left to be my own weather forecaster. Hourly data was scattered in multiple places, in tiny charts, and without precision. I felt like I was tapping 15 times, jumping between views, and keeping it all in my head.
Sunroof is a new kind of weather app, with a single unified design focused on the weather of the near future. Sunroof tries to strike a balance between presenting the data you need to make decisions about going outdoors, without overloading you with clutter. It uses the metaphor of a timeline – a familiar affordance from social media apps – to let you fast forward into the future and not just inspect all the relevant weather conditions at once, but also transform the UI around you to "feel" like the day will feel at exactly that time.
What's more, Sunroof's maps aren't presented as a "movie" with a Play button – they are synchronized to your timeline, so as you scroll, the weather on the map moves with you.
I wanted Sunroof to be fast, beautiful, and filled with delight – the kind of app that a user would be happy to wake up to.
Sunroof is built natively in SwiftUI (plus a bit of Metal) for iOS. An Android version is planned for the future.
Sunroof is 100% ad-free, clutter-free, and popup-free – with three tiers, including a Free tier ("Sunroof Lite"), plus two subscription tiers containing more features.
