Sonora
The open source Sonos™ web controller you've always wanted
Sonora is a self-hosted web controller for Sonos™ S1 and S2 systems. Free and open source, Sonora works in any browser on any device with over a dozen responsive themes included - or make your own! Sonora is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or supported by Sonos, Inc. "Sonos" is a trademark of Sonos, Inc.
Sonora is the Sonos controller I've always wanted.
Self-hosted, web-based, cross-platform, free.
When I got my first Sonos devices in 2013, I fell in love with them immediately.
The Problem:
While the hardware is phenomenal, controlling Sonos devices has only become more frustrating over the years:
If you've got older Sonos hardware, you'll need to use two separate apps to control music (S1/S2).
If you're a Linux user, you've never had a way to control Sonos devices from your desktop and are forced onto a phone. Bleh.
Recent Sonos mobile app design and layout changes have not been universally loved.
Sonos plans to discontinue their Windows and Mac apps entirely, pushing all desktop users onto their cloud-based web player which, today: doesn't support S1 devices, won't work on mobile devices, and doesn't live on your network.
The Solution:
Sonora fixes all of these issues - and more:
It's web-based, self-hosted.
Controls S1 and S2 devices from a single app.
Works on any OS, in any browser, on any size screen.
Local-first control. Sonos logins are supported, but optional, just as they are in Sonos' own apps.
It's themeable! Sonora ships with 13 fully-responsive themes today, including mobile-friendly interpretations of Sonos' own Mac, Windows, and web apps. Don't like any of the 13? You can build your own! Or tell your robot to do it. Themes aren't just "skins" - they can change how the entire app is organized.
Why Sonora Exists:
I waited patiently for over a decade for Sonos to release a Linux desktop controller, scouring GitHub for any mature open source options every few months, finding none. Then Claude Code came along and changed everything!
AI-directed development allowed me to build Sonora into the Sonos controller I'd always wanted in about two months of nights and weekends. And better yet, I could make it available not just to myself, but to anyone with a web browser.
I use Sonora every day.
I want Sonora to feel as smooth and as polished as the entire Sonos experience is meant to be.
I only have a few Sonos speakers (mainly S1s) and I don't subscribe to any paid streaming services, so my ability to build and test against every possible configuration is limited. Please report any issues you find on Github! I'll investigate and fix anything I can.
Sonos has built something wonderful, and Sonora helps even more of the world experience it. It's a win for users and a win for Sonos. Enjoy!

Who hunted Sonora?
Sonora was hunted by Bretteroo. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it. Hunters typically write the first comment explaining why a product is worth attention, and their followers are notified the moment they post. Around 79% of featured launches on Product Hunt are self-hunted by their makers, but a well-known hunter still acts as a signal of quality to the rest of the community. See the full all-time top hunters leaderboard to discover who is shaping the Product Hunt ecosystem.
