Ranking Trivia Quiz

Trivia on the world's #1s, where your gut is usually wrong

Most of us think we know the world's number ones. Which country has the most islands? Not Indonesia or the Philippines - Sweden. The most time zones? Not Russia - France. The most bridges? Not Venice - Hamburg. Ranking Trivia Quiz is 150 questions built on exactly these gaps: three plausible answers, one surprising #1, and a short explanation of why. Five questions a round, about a minute, on the train or offline. Free with ads, no account, in 17 languages.

Hi Product Hunt! Quick test before you read the rest. Which country has the most islands? If you said Indonesia or the Philippines, you're in good company. It's Sweden - over 267,000 of them, mostly small rocky islets that nobody puts on a postcard. I got that one wrong too. Then I kept finding more like it. France spans more time zones than Russia (12, thanks to its overseas territories). Hamburg has more bridges than Venice and Amsterdam combined. You are tallest just after waking up. A snail has more teeth than a shark. None of these are obscure. They're just questions where the famous answer and the true answer are different. Ranking Trivia Quiz is a collection of exactly those. WHAT IT ACTUALLY DOES FOR YOU You open it on the train, play five questions, and in about a minute you've lost at least one argument with yourself. Then you read why - and that "why" is the part you end up repeating to someone at dinner. Wrong answers that look right. Every question has three choices, and the wrong ones are the answers most people reach for first. The point isn't to test what you memorized. It's to find where your mental map of the world is off. An explanation for every question. All 150 questions come with a short note on the actual number or the reason behind it, so you learn something whether you got it right or not. Works anywhere, in your language. It runs fully offline and is available in 17 languages, including Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Swedish and both Simplified and Traditional Chinese. Your progress stays on your device. Free. No subscription. No account. There are ads to keep it free, and no in-app purchases at all. WHY I THINK THIS MATTERS We tend to assume our sense of "the biggest" or "the most" comes from facts. Mostly it comes from what's famous. Indonesia is famous for islands, so it must have the most. Venice is famous for bridges, so it must win. That shortcut works for things that are measured often and talked about constantly - the largest country, the highest mountain. Almost everyone gets those right, and they're in the Beginner level for that reason. It breaks down for things that are rarely counted, or counted with a definition you didn't know about. The part I didn't expect: while writing the questions, I realized how many "number ones" depend on the definition. Is a tomato a fruit? Does an overseas territory count? Is the Nile really longer than the Amazon? I had been treating rankings as settled facts, when a lot of them are quiet arguments about how to count. Two questions for you: 1. What's a world #1 you were completely sure about, and later found out was wrong? I'll turn the best ones into questions in the next update. 2. Do you think "famous" really beats "facts" in how we picture the world, or am I overstating it? Thanks for taking a look - and for telling me which of my answers you'd argue with.
