Plank

A compiled language you can read in an evening

Plank is a small compiled language whose whole compiler is one Python file. Structs, enums with match, optionals, closures, lists and dicts, a garbage collector, and native binaries through LLVM on macOS and Linux. Free and open source.

Building a language sounds like a year of work and most tutorials quit right before the part that makes a binary. I wanted the opposite: the smallest thing that's still a real compiler. Plank is one Python file on llvmlite. You write fib in it and get a native executable. `plank emit` shows you the LLVM IR, which is the best way I've found to learn what a compiler actually does. Arrays and structs are next. It's free and meant to be forked and taught from.

Who hunted Plank?

Plank was hunted by Joshua Trommel. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it. Hunters typically write the first comment explaining why a product is worth attention, and their followers are notified the moment they post. Around 79% of featured launches on Product Hunt are self-hunted by their makers, but a well-known hunter still acts as a signal of quality to the rest of the community.
