Pict-o-view

A fast, private photo viewer for your Mac — no importing

Pict-o-view opens folders of photos instantly — no importing, no library, no cloud. Unlike Photos.app, it only sees folders you explicitly add; unlike Lightroom, there's zero setup. Point it at a folder and browse at full speed: instant photo paging, non-destructive rotate/crop, slideshows, video with picture-in-picture, and drag-and-drop file management. Fully offline, App Sandboxed, zero data collection. Built natively with SwiftUI for macOS. Your photos stay yours, on your Mac.

Hi Product Hunt! 👋 I built Pict-o-view out of a simple frustration: I just wanted to flip through folders of photos on my Mac — fast — without importing everything into a library app or giving a tool access to my whole disk. So it does exactly that. Add a folder, see your photos instantly. No accounts, no cloud, no analytics — it can't even see folders you haven't added (App Sandbox enforces it). Under the hood: native SwiftUI + AppKit, instant photo paging with prefetch caching, non-destructive rotate/crop, slideshows, video playback with picture-in-picture — all fully offline. Fun facts from the journey: built in two weeks with Claude as my AI pair programmer, rejected by App Store review three times (turns out you can't put "Mac" in an app name — RIP "GalleryMac"), and the hardest bug was a window that shivered because of a single AppKit toolbar constraint. I'd love your feedback — especially from anyone who culls photo shoots or keeps photos in plain folders. What would make this your daily driver? I'll be here all day answering questions! 🙌
