Open Painter

Free, open-source 3D texturing inside Blender

Open Painter is a free, open-source 3D texturing studio inside Blender. Paint across 8 material channels, build non-destructive layers, and customise 50 editable smart materials. Add mesh-aware masks and procedural aging, bake mesh maps, and export for Unreal or Unity without switching apps. Core texturing works offline with no account. Optional AI turns material descriptions into editable layers, not just flat images.

Hey everyone, I’m Khazar, the maker of Open Painter. I’m building this around a simple idea: texturing should feel like part of creating a 3D model, not a separate job in another application. Open Painter brings a dedicated texturing workflow into Blender. You can paint across material channels, combine procedural and hand-painted layers, build masks, bake mesh maps, and export textures for your game engine while working on the same asset. A big part of the idea is keeping materials editable. A weathered surface shouldn’t just be a finished image. You should be able to open it up, change the underlying material, adjust the wear, repaint a mask, and make it yours. The 50 included smart materials are starting points, not locked presets. There’s also optional AI assistance that turns descriptions into editable layers and masks. But AI isn’t a requirement: the core texturing workflow runs offline, without an account. Open Painter is free and open source. I’d especially love feedback from Blender artists and indie game developers trying it on a real asset, including where the workflow feels awkward or gets in your way. What currently makes you leave Blender to finish texturing an asset?
