Nanotype
A private online text editor with markdown. Open and type.
Nanotype is a free, minimal, fast, private in-browser text editor with Markdown. The text is stored only in your browser, never on a server. Works offline, customizable editor, focus mode, slash commands, sharing with no server in between. Just open and use.
I know most of you come here expecting another frontier model release, a new agent framework or an AI tool. This one is a little different: a page where you write, and nothing else. A small tool some of you might find a use for.
Nanotype is a free text editor that runs in the browser. Open the page and type; your text is there when you come back. It never leaves your browser: no account, no server, nothing to sign up for. The code is open source so "private" is something you can read rather than take on trust.
What it does:
- Fast: a static page with no framework, it opens and you are typing. A keystroke costs about a millisecond, even in a half-million-character document.
- Saves as you type, works offline, installs as an app, runs on a phone.
- Plain text and Markdown with a live preview: headings, lists, tasks you can tick, tables, code.
- Multiple documents, a contents list, focus mode, line numbers.
- Sharing with no server in between: a link that carries the text inside itself, public or locked with a seed word.
- A command menu (Cmd K) that reaches everything, and a key for every command.
- Slash commands: /date, /table, /task, /code and the rest.
- Tidy: one command that fixes text pasted from anywhere, joining broken lines, evening spaces, turning bullets into Markdown.
- Themes, fonts, key sounds: enough to make it yours, no more.
Everything on the page has to earn its place, and nothing should get between you and the writing.
Some of you may know it as Zen. We made it in 2016, it came to Product Hunt in 2019, and a good number of people kept using it, many of them daily. Nanotype is the same app ten years on, rebuilt from the inside and better in every part. Product Hunt brought the first version many of its users, so it seemed right to bring this one here too.
If you try it, we would like to hear what you think, and what should be better. Thank you.

Who hunted Nanotype?
Nanotype was hunted by Nazir Dashtiev. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it. Hunters typically write the first comment explaining why a product is worth attention, and their followers are notified the moment they post. Around 79% of featured launches on Product Hunt are self-hunted by their makers, but a well-known hunter still acts as a signal of quality to the rest of the community.
