LinkUnzip

Download the files inside a ZIP without saving the ZIP

Download the files inside a zip straight into Downloads or a folder, without ever saving the zip. LinkUnzip shows what's inside a zip on any website, so you can take all of it or just the files you need, and only those get downloaded. Preview a file first: text, CSV, images, PDF, audio, video. Before anything is written it shows the space you need next to a normal download. Every file is checked as it arrives. No account, no tracking, open source. Free, nothing else to install.

Hi Product Hunt! I'm a 4th year CS student and I made LinkUnzip. How it started: I needed a 60 GB zip of MTO data, and my drive didn't have room for the zip plus everything inside it. I thought there should be a command-line tool that extracts it straight from the link, so I built one. Then I thought about people who don't know much about computers, or who only want a few files out of a big zip, and turned it into a browser extension. I use it for that 60 GB zip myself, so it's made for big archives. What it does: right-click a link to a zip and choose "Extract with LinkUnzip". The files inside are downloaded straight into a folder, and the zip itself is never saved. You can take everything, or tick only the files you need, and then only those are downloaded. How it works: a zip keeps its index at the end of the file. LinkUnzip asks the server for just that part, shows you the file list and the space you'll need, then fetches only the parts it needs. A small Windows helper does the actual work and checks every file (CRC-32 and size) before it gets its real name. For servers that can't send parts of a file, like GitHub's "Download ZIP", it reads the zip once from start to end, still without saving it. The command-line version is still included for people who prefer it. Another example: one photo out of the 18.01 GB COCO dataset took about 6 seconds and downloaded 12.2 MB, mostly the zip's index. Honest limits: Windows only for now, it needs the small free helper (no admin rights), and RAR/7z and password-protected zips aren't supported yet. If the connection drops, the file being written starts over; files already finished are kept. It's free and open source. I'd love to hear which links it fails on!
