I take a lot of screenshots. Error messages, license keys, invoices, meeting notes — you name it. They all end up in one folder, all named Screenshot 2026-whatever.png. And a week later when I actually needed one, I'd be scrolling through hundreds of files trying to visually recognize the right thumbnail. You can't Ctrl+F an image, and it genuinely bothered me every single time it happened.
So I built Kaptur to fix exactly that. It watches your screenshots folder quietly in the background, reads the text inside every image the moment you capture it using your OS's own OCR, and makes the whole thing instantly searchable — hit a hotkey, type a word you remember, and it's right there.
The approach actually changed a lot while building this. I originally used Tesseract for OCR, but hit a real packaging problem — Tesseract's Windows binary needs a folder of DLLs alongside it, which doesn't bundle cleanly into a desktop installer. So I switched to Windows' own native OCR API instead. No external dependencies, nothing to install separately, and it happens to give word-level positioning data too — which turned out to be exactly what I needed for the next feature I wanted to build.
That feature is the one I actually care about most: as it reads your screenshots, it can also blur out sensitive stuff — passwords, card numbers, OTPs — before you ever share one. You can also blur anything manually yourself, and when you drag a screenshot out of the app into a chat or email, that protection is already baked into the image, not something you have to remember to do separately.
Everything runs 100% offline. No account, no cloud, no telemetry — I built this to be a tool I could actually trust with my own screenshots, so nothing about it phones home.
It's free and open-source. Windows only for now — Mac is something I'm considering, but haven't started yet.
