Gloss
Highlight anything. Understand what your AI is saying.
AI agents tell people things like "add your API key to theenv file" all day, and a lot of people just do it, without knowing what aenv file is. Gloss is for that moment. Highlight any text in any app, press a hotkey, and it explains what the thing is, why your AI wants it in your project (it can read your screen), what yes or no changes, and if you can undo it. One tap translates the card, Bangla by default. Free, open source, no accounts, your own key. There's also a pet.
Hi Product Hunt! 👋
So, cards on the table: this is a hackathon build. I made it in three days with Codex on GPT-5.6 for OpenAI Build Week, and it came out good enough that I wanted to show it to more people than just the judges. If enough people find Gloss useful, I'll keep building it and make it properly good. If not, it was a fun three days.
What Gloss does:
🔍 Highlight any text, in any app (works over a live terminal too), and press one hotkey
🃏 You get a decision card instead of a definition: what the thing is, why your AI wants it in your project, what changes if you say yes or no, and whether you can undo it later
👀 It can look at your screen (one screenshot per lookup, there's a toggle) so the answer is about your project, not projects in general
🌏 One tap translates the card. বাংলা is the default because it's my language. Ten presets, or type any other
📖 Everything you look up gets saved, and it counts what you learned this week
🐣 There's a desktop pet. He is also Gloss. He thinks while the thinking happens
Windows only for now. Mac, auto-popup on selection, and a version that needs no API key are all on the maybe-list, and enough people asking is exactly what moves them up. You bring your own OpenAI key, no account needed; nothing leaves your machine except the request to OpenAI, and a lookup costs about half a cent. It's three days old, so if something breaks, tell me and I'll fix it.
Free, open source, MIT.
I'll be around all day. Tell me if this is worth building for real. And ask me anything, including why the mascot is an ink drop wearing glasses. 🍵

Who hunted Gloss?
Gloss was hunted by Arifur Rahman Akash. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it. Hunters typically write the first comment explaining why a product is worth attention, and their followers are notified the moment they post. Around 79% of featured launches on Product Hunt are self-hunted by their makers, but a well-known hunter still acts as a signal of quality to the rest of the community.
