Jeremy Beard here, founder of Format Magic.
I spent years in business development where I had to create a large number of proposals, reports, tenders and the like. I always found formatting the final doc to be one of the most painful aspects. I tried a wide variety of online tools for document automation and none of them worked how I expected, or as well as I expected - so Format Magic was born.
We officially launched in late 2024 with PDF output only. We received a great reception and built a loyal user base but there were of course some teething issues! Turns out that there are a lot of edge cases when it comes to formatting, who knew! So we've since spent a great deal of time and effort ironing out the edge cases, building additional features like the template uploader and customizer, output editor, text and image extraction support etc and the big one - pivoting to native Word output which we have just released. We are really happy with the outcome!
We've done a big upgrade to the Word template customizer. Creating great looking templates in Word is a nightmare for most users. We've made it easy and we even provide full support for effects such as glows and shadows, heading decorations and the like. No more digging through a thousand tabs in Word just to change an indent!
One new feature we're particularly proud of is equation handling. If you've ever pasted math from ChatGPT or Claude into Word, you'll know it arrives as raw LaTeX, often in a mix of styles and delimiters, scattered through normal paragraphs, with chemistry formulas thrown in. Format Magic finds every equation in the document and turns them all into native, fully editable Word equations in one pass, while it formats everything else.
