Hey Product Hunt! I've been training for 20 years, and for most of that time my "fitness stack" was three or four apps stitched together. Hevy and Strong for lifting, MyFitnessPal and later Cal AI for food, Happy Scale for weight. They're genuinely good apps, and I used them daily for years. But they never talked to each other, so the most important question, "is what I'm doing actually working?", meant flicking between apps and doing the maths myself.
A few things kept bugging me:
Logging food was still a chore, so I'd skip it on busy days. In Focal you snap a photo, scan a barcode, or just describe what you ate, and you get macros in seconds.
Daily scale weight is mostly noise. Focal tracks your weight trend the way Happy Scale does, so a salty dinner doesn't ruin your week.
Set logging had to be fast enough to use mid-session with a barbell waiting, so that's what I obsessed over first: quick entry, plate calculator, rest timers, programmes that carry your numbers forward.
And the bit no single app gave me: a week review that puts training, food, steps and weight on one screen, so you can see cause and effect instead of guessing.
The approach changed a lot along the way. It started as a lifting tracker for myself, but every time I reached for a second app I asked whether it belonged in Focal instead. Nutrition, check-ins and Apple Health made the cut; anything that didn't help answer "is it working?" got left out.
