What inspired this: I'm from Zimbabwe, where thousands of people - especially those in the diaspora - build family homes back home, brick by brick, often from another continent. The first real question every one of them faces is deceptively simple: "What will this actually cost?" The answer is a Bill of Quantities, and getting one traditionally means finding a quantity surveyor, waiting 2–6 weeks, and paying hundreds of dollars - before you've laid a single brick. Most people skip it, build blind, and run out of money halfway. Half-finished houses are practically part of the skyline.
What it does: Upload your dimensioned floor plans, pick your country and currency, and in minutes you get a complete, priced, source-cited BoQ - every wall, opening, and roof sheet measured, every rate cited. You pay 1% of the estimated building cost, only when it's ready.
How the approach evolved - two hard lessons:
We started by letting AI do everything. Bad idea - LLMs are confident but inconsistent at arithmetic. We rebuilt it so a deterministic engine computes all quantities from the extracted dimensions, and AI is only used for what it's genuinely good at: reading drawings and looking up regional unit rates. Same drawing in, same quantities out, every time.
We assumed one "international" BoQ template would work everywhere. Then real users showed us real bills - a Kenyan QS bill and a Zimbabwean one - and they looked nothing like our output. So we rebuilt the renderer around authentic local formats: SMM elemental bills for East Africa, ASAQS for Southern Africa, NRM2 for the UK, MasterFormat takeoffs for the US, Leistungsverzeichnis for Germany… ~200 countries, 38 measurement standards, in the PDF and the spreadsheet.
