Hey Product Hunt 👋 Every app I build starts the same way. I went looking for it, and it wasn't there. Either nothing did the job at all, or the apps that existed did most of it and stopped just short of the part I actually needed. With emoji, what existed was pickers. ⌃⌘Space, a grid, a search box, scrolling. Rocket does the : trigger well, but you still stop typing and commit to a menu. What I wanted was for the emoji to already be there by the time I finished the word, and to never take my hands off the home row. That's Emojist. The suggestion bar Start typing and a small bar appears just above your text cursor. It narrows with every letter, so by the third character it's usually one keystroke away. It reads the actual caret position through the accessibility API, so it lands where you're writing, in any app. Four ways to insert, all live at once No mode to switch, no setting to pick. 1 to 9 replaces the word you just typed with that emoji ⌥ and a number keeps the word and adds the emoji after it. Press again to stack. ⌃ and a number swaps a whole matched phrase for its emoji combo ⌥⌃ and a number adds that combo after the words ⌥ always means "after". That's the only thing to remember. Phrases, not just words Type "on my way" and you get 🚗🏃🛣️ as one set, not three separate guesses at the last word. 743 expressions ship built in, covering greetings, plans, reactions, celebrations. All editable, and you can add your own. Auto-insert, only where you want it Every emoji starts in Suggest, so nothing ever fires on its own. Flip the ones you actually use to Auto and they type themselves the moment you finish their exact keyword. Changed your mind? One backspace right after puts your word back. Quick Triggers Your own shortcuts. Type .saudi, get 🇸🇦. Apply and Strip on a selection ⌥⇧A sprinkles matching emoji through text you already wrote. ⌥⇧R takes them all back out, either deleting them or swapping each for its name. Both preserve rich text, so links, bold, and inline images survive. A catalog you actually own 1,898 emoji and over 11,000 keywords, all searchable and all editable. Add words, delete ones you disagree with, mark favourites, set each emoji to Off, Suggest, or Auto. It flags conflicts so two emoji never fight over the same word. Bulk actions when you want to change everything at once. Stays out of the way Lives in the menu bar. Pauses with ⌥⇧E. Never types in your terminal, code editor, or password manager, and it leaves password fields alone everywhere. It also steps back entirely while a composing input method is active, because counting keystrokes there would delete the wrong characters. Drag the bar anywhere to lock it, or let it follow your cursor. Your data Everything is local. No account, no cloud, no telemetry, nothing you type ever leaves your Mac. Automatic rolling backups, one-click reset to defaults, and import/export if you want to move your setup. Native Swift, universal for Apple silicon and Intel, macOS 14+. One honest note: it needs Accessibility and Input Monitoring, because reading what you type is the whole feature. That also means it can't be sandboxed, so it ships directly rather than through the Mac App Store. Direct fits it better anyway.
