Costwise UK
Free UK home improvement cost data, 150 jobs, no signup
Honest price ranges for 150 UK home improvement jobs, from a new boiler to a loft conversion. Free calculators, regional figures, and the whole dataset under CC BY 4.0 with a DOI. No sign-up, no paywall, and no lead form before you get to see a price.
Hi all, Stephen here.
I built Costwise because every UK site that tells you what a job costs is really a lead form with a number attached. You get a price only after you hand over your details, and the price is usually whatever makes you pick up the phone.
So I did the boring version. 150 jobs, each with a low, typical and high price, every figure dated and reviewed, plus regional multipliers because a London extension is not a Newcastle extension. There is a free calculator for each one, plus 14 material calculators that tell you how much concrete, turf, topsoil or paint you actually need.
Two things that might interest this crowd specifically:
The whole dataset is open. CC BY 4.0, a downloadable CSV, and a DOI on Zenodo. Take it, cite it, build on it. I would rather the numbers were checkable than proprietary.
The calculators are embeddable. One copy-paste block and you can put any of them on your own site for free.
Being straight about the model: it is free to read, and the site earns if you choose to ask for installer quotes, or through a small number of clearly marked affiliate links. That is disclosed on every page it applies to. Nothing changes the prices you see.
It is about a month old and I run it alone, so it is rough in places. Genuinely interested in what breaks or what is missing, especially from anyone who has renovated recently and can tell me a figure looks wrong.

Who hunted Costwise UK?
Costwise UK was hunted by Stephen Evans. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it. Hunters typically write the first comment explaining why a product is worth attention, and their followers are notified the moment they post. Around 79% of featured launches on Product Hunt are self-hunted by their makers, but a well-known hunter still acts as a signal of quality to the rest of the community.
